Time for a Fire Safety Check

While a home with an excellent fire safety system may not attract potential buyers as quickly as, say, great curb appeal, it's important to take precautions and routinely check your fire safety equipment.

Replace the old batteries in your home's smoke alarms with new ones. While you're at it, dust each alarm and test it to make sure it functions properly. Make sure you have installed enough smoke alarms for the size of your home - at least one per story, especially near bedrooms.

It's also a good idea to check your fire extinguishers. Many models expire after a certain number of years. Check your model to determine if it needs to be serviced or replaced. Each home should have at least one extinguisher in the kitchen, and it's a good idea to keep one in the garage as well.

Finally, take a few minutes to scan your home's power outlets. Overloaded circuits are the cause of many home fires. Replace any cord or plug that has cracks or visible damage.

These easy maintenance tasks can improve your home's safety and increase its value on the market.
